Dive into a world of aquatic fun and nurturing learning at the Pediatric Movement Center! We offer a variety of swim lessons at our therapeutic pool located at our aquatics center, situated at 1105 Maryland Avenue, Hagerstown, MD. Our skilled swim instructors specialize in tailoring age-appropriate swim skills to each individual's unique abilities in our therapeutic pool. If you require any adaptations or special arrangements, please don't hesitate to contact us, and we'll gladly customize a lesson to suit your specific needs. At PMC, we know that each swimmer is different and we encourage all swimmers to develop their skills at their own pace and comfort!

Beginner Swimmers

During swim lessons, beginner swimmers will learn to master the following skills with confidence in a fun, loving environment

  • Skills

    • Getting into the water/getting use to the water
    • Safely entering and moving around in the water
    • Blowing  bubbles in the water
    • Wets their hands and then face
    • Submerges the mouth and nose
    • Kicks legs and blows bubbles
    • Splashing and being comfortable with water in the air

Intermediate Swimmers

During swim lessons, intermediate swimmers will learn to master the following skills with confidence in a fun, loving environment

  • Skills

    • Submerges into water (holds breath while submerged) 
    • Collects objects under water
    • Floats
    • Glides in the water
    • Holds breath in the water
    • Can kick legs and arms in an alternating pattern that propels swimmer 
    • Learns basic kicking, front paddle, breaststroke & can swim specific distances

Advanced Swimmers

During swim lessons, advanced swimmers will learn to master the following skills with confidence in a fun, loving environment

  • Skills

    • Comfortable swimming in deep water
    • Coordinated breathing with arm/leg movement
    • Glides in the water after each kick
    • Stroke movements are continuous while moving
    • Backstroke
    • Fingers move together, toes are pointed
    • Body moves in a rhythmic, wave-like way

*If your child has significant needs (physical or cognitive) our team recommends that they start their swimming journey at PMC in a private/semi private session. That will give our teachers the opportunity to get to know your child and make a recommendation on which group class would be a good fit for them, as well as give your child the opportunity to start learning the safety and the beginning of skills in a one-on-one setting.

Sea Turtles Swim Class

  • Level 1

    Sea Turtles is our introductory swim class designed specifically for toddlers and their caregivers. In a warm, supportive environment, young swimmers will begin to build comfort and confidence in the water through playful and engaging activities. This Level 1 class focuses on:


    • Getting accustomed to the water
    • Safe water entry and movement
    • Blowing bubbles
    • Wetting hands and face
    • Submerging mouth and nose
    • Kicking while blowing bubbles
    • Splashing and enjoying water play

    This is a perfect first step into water safety and swim readiness, helping little ones feel secure while having fun!

  • Level 2

    Sea Turtles Level 2 is designed for preschool-aged children and their caregivers who are ready to build foundational swim skills in a fun, nurturing environment. Through interactive activities and gentle guidance, swimmers will grow more confident and comfortable in the water. This class focuses on:


    • Entering and becoming familiar with the water
    • Safe movement in and around the pool
    • Blowing bubbles
    • Wetting hands and face
    • Submerging mouth and nose
    • Kicking legs while blowing bubbles
    • Splashing and playing with confidence

    This level encourages greater independence while continuing to strengthen parent-child connection and water safety basics.

Goldfish

Swim Class

  • Level 1

    Goldfish Level 1 is designed for beginner to intermediate swimmers who are ready to build confidence and foundational swim skills in a small-group, student-only setting. Swimmers are guided with gentle encouragement to explore movement and control in the water while developing comfort and basic technique. Skills introduced and practiced include:


    • Submerging head and holding breath
    • Floating on front and back with assistance
    • Gliding through the water with support
    • Retrieving submerged objects
    • Blowing bubbles and practicing breath control
    • Kicking with straight legs
    • Coordinating arms and legs to propel through the water
    • Introduction to front paddle and elementary breaststroke movements

    This class focuses on water safety, developing independence, and preparing swimmers for more advanced techniques.


  • Level 2

    Goldfish Level 2 is a progression of our foundational class, geared toward swimmers who have developed basic water confidence and are ready for more independent and refined movement. In this level, children begin mastering swim technique, endurance, and breath control while continuing to learn through structured, playful instruction. Skills emphasized include:


    • Independent floating and gliding
    • Confident submersion and breath-holding for extended periods
    • Controlled kicks and coordinated arm movements
    • Swimming short distances independently
    • Mastering basic freestyle (front crawl) and introductory backstroke
    • Retrieving objects from deeper water
    • Practicing rollovers and turning in the water
    • Building strength, stamina, and swim consistency

    This class supports the transition toward stroke development and longer, more confident swims — while keeping learning fun and engaging.

Dolphin

Swim Class

  • Level 1

    Dolphins Level 1 is designed for swimmers who are comfortable in the water and ready to refine their technique, strength, and coordination. This level emphasizes independence in the pool and builds the foundation for more advanced swim strokes and endurance. Skills introduced and reinforced include:


    • Swimming comfortably in shallow and mid-depth water
    • Coordinated arm and leg movement with rhythmic breathing
    • Gliding with control after kicks
    • Beginning freestyle with a focus on form and flow
    • Introduction to backstroke basics
    • Practicing smooth, continuous movement through the water
    • Pointed toes, together fingers, and body alignment
    • Body control with basic wave-like movement patterns

    This class prepares swimmers for deeper water, longer distances, and more advanced techniques in a supportive, energetic setting.

  • Level 2

    Dolphins Level 2 is ideal for advanced swimmers who are ready to build endurance, refine stroke technique, and swim confidently in deep water. Swimmers in this class focus on precision, fluidity, and efficiency while mastering more complex swim skills. Skills covered and refined include:


    • Confident swimming in deep water for extended periods
    • Coordinated breathing with sustained freestyle strokes
    • Strong glides and push-offs with body alignment
    • Mastery of freestyle with continuous, rhythmic motion
    • Advanced backstroke with form and flow
    • Emphasis on technique: fingers together, toes pointed, streamlined posture
    • Body coordination for smooth, wave-like movement
    • Stroke transitions and building endurance across pool lengths

    This level helps swimmers transition from strong recreational swimmers toward pre-competitive skill sets, fostering confidence, stamina, and stroke consistency.

  • FAQs

    • Guldmann Lift System (chair lift for transfers, and training in the water) 
    • Therapeutic salt-water pool with temperature between 87-92 degrees.
    • Available to all client's are appropriate floatation devices based on clients height/weight/need (example: life vests, pool noodles, adjustable foam swim collars)
    • Changing rooms available
    • Showers are located in men and women's restroom 
    • Showering rinse is required before entering the pool
    • Parents/guardians are required to be in the pool with children enrolled in the Sea Turtle classes
    • Parents/guardians are required to stay on-premises in aquatic center waiting area during the duration of their child's swim lessons
  • Swim Scholarships

    $100 swim scholarships are available on a first-come-first enrolled basis for eligible patrons!* Scholarships for swimming have been made possible through the generosity of Pathfinders for Autism and their Swim Safety Program.  Together we can educate on water safety courses and save lives!


    *Swim Scholarship is for any individual with an intellectual or developmental diagnosis

  • Class Requirements

    In order to balance water safety, skills, and the overall learning experience, the Pediatric Movement Center has the following requirements for any student enrolling in one of our group swim classes:   


    Class Requirements: 


    • Independence: For students participating in our group classes, all students should function well (based on age-appropriate levels) in a group setting without parents (except for our Sea Turtles group, where parent participation is required).  
    • Respectful Conduct: Children should be capable of listening and following basic instructions from the swim instructor, including safety rules and behavior guidelines. Similarly, respectful, non-disruptive behavior is expected towards lifeguards, fellow participants, and staff.
    • Listening Skills: Children should demonstrate age-appropriate listening skills. Children should be able to listen to instructors and follow instructions promptly with active engagement and participation.
    • Safe Play: Students may not engage in any behavior that could endanger themselves or others, and always practice safe play in the water.
    • Cooperation: Students should be able to work together during group activities and not engage in disruptive behavior.
    • Poolside Behavior: Students must have proper etiquette at all times, including staying in designated areas & following all safety rules.
    • Medical Information: Parents/guardians may need to provide medical information when enrolling their child in swim lessons. If you would like to request medical accommodations for swim lessons, please reach out to a member of our team!
