October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month!

October is Down syndrome month! This month is a great reminder to celebrate the abilities & share awareness of those with Down Syndrome, those caring for loved ones with Down Syndrome, and those in the medical field striving for continued medical advancements!
What is Down Syndrome?
Down syndrome occurs when individuals have an extra copy or part of a copy of chromosome 21, and can affect brain and physical development. Individuals who have an extra copy or part of chromosome 21 may experience a range of cognitive and/or physical symptom, such as:
- Decreased muscle tone or loose joints
- Short attention span
- Slow learning
- Delayed language and speech development
What can you do to spread awareness and help?
- Join a Buddy Walk
- Volunteer
- Medical and Political advocacy
- Community support and engagement
Community Engagement
Get involved with local advocacy groups! The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) has a local chapter in Frederick, Maryland called the FRIENDS, which stands for Family Resource, Information & Education Network for Down Syndrome.
