Sensory Food Project!

Whether it’s a rainy day or just need a ‘downtime’ activity, snacklaces to the rescue! While you are building your snacklaces, engage in conversation with your child: can they build a pattern? What colors are they using? What is the texture like? Is the food they are stringing on hard? Soft? Bumpy? Smooth? Can you come up with a theme to guide them? Perhaps they can string together a fun snack for a movie night or a pool party snack!
Materials Needed:
- String, yarn, or string licorice
- Pretzels that have holes in them
- Cheerios cereal (plain, Honey Nut, Strawberry Banana, so many flavors to choose from!)
- Fruit Loops/Aldi Fruit Rounds cereal
- Honey Combs cereal
- Apple Jacks
- Funyuns
- Gummy Lifesavers
- Hard Lifesavers
- Gummy peach rings
- Dried apple rings
- Harvest Snaps Crunchy Loops
- Cookie rings
- Mini bagels
- Mini crackers with holes
- Cooked pasta
- …what can you add to the list?
If your child is able to thread a plastic needle and use one safely, you could add popcorn, cheese cubes, marshmallows, grapes, blueberries, dried pineapple, dried apricots, raisins, Craisins, grapes, dried figs, dried dates, cucumber rounds, soft pretzel bites.

A big thank you to Emily Poole, RD, for this fun project! Exposing children to food through various activities like cooking, coloring and sensory play/projects enhances their understanding of food, leading to healthier eating habits. These activities foster positive associations with food, encourage trying new foods, and develop valuable life skills!
