Celebrating Matthew:
Years of Courage, Confidence, and Incredible Growth at PMC

Celebrating Matthew!
We have the pleasure of celebrating one very special kiddo, Matthew, and the incredible progress he has made throughout his years in therapy at PMC! After speaking with his occupational therapist, Ms. Colleen, and his mother, Jennifer, we were able to hear firsthand just how much Matthew is truly thriving.
Matthew has been receiving therapy since the age of two and has been part of the PMC family since the early days of COVID. Over time, he has grown into one of the most enthusiastic, charismatic children to walk through our doors. In fact, many affectionately refer to him as “the mayor of PMC” and if you’ve ever met him, you will understand why!
But Matthew’s confidence didn’t appear overnight. It has grown slowly and steadily through dedication, encouragement, and the collaborative efforts of PMC’s speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy teams.
Growing Confidence in the Pool and Beyond
Just one year ago, Matthew could only swim with a life jacket. Today, he swims across the pool independently, grinning with pride with every stroke. His progress has been nothing short of inspiring, and it all rests on building one foundational element: trust.
When Matthew first began aquatic therapy with Ms. Colleen, an occupational therapist, Matthew had a lot of fear of being in the water. Through patience, trust-building, and many days of showing up and making another brave step forward, Matthew began to believe in himself little by little, and his confidence grew. Now, he swims across the pool with ease! His mother, Jennifer, shared that his bravery in the water has carried over into every area of his life. His confidence at school has soared, and at home he’s showing more independence, emotional maturity, and a newfound willingness to try new things.
Skills Developed as Tools for Life
Matthew has also made remarkable progress with his therapist Ms. Alyssa in land-based PT, where he has worked on strengthening his core, coordination, and balance. These improvements have been further supported by the skills he’s developed in the pool. In fact, he has made such tremendous strides that he is now on his way to graduating from aquatic therapy very soon, Ms. Colleen shared. Similarly, his speech and communication skills have also made extraordinary leaps. Where it was once challenging for others to understand him, his speech intelligence has grown to the point where he can express himself more clearly and proudly. Emotional regulation has been another major area of growth for Matthew. With practical strategies and guidance from Ms. Colleen, his family has gained tools they can use at home to help him navigate big emotions more effectively. These skills have empowered Matthew and contributed to the calm, confidence, and resilience he shows across all settings. These milestones are a true testament to his hard work. We are so proud of you, Matthew!
A Braver, Happier Matthew
Through every challenge, Matthew has shown up with bravery. He has stepped out of his comfort zone, embraced new experiences, and shown us all what determination truly looks like. His story reminds us that progress isn’t measured only in skills gained. It’s measured in trust built, courage embraced, and joy discovered along the way.
We are incredibly proud of the amazing young boy Matthew is becoming, and we cannot wait to see what new milestones he’ll conquer next. After all, when you’re the “mayor of PMC,” anything is possible!

No-plate dinners mean no dishes and no pressure—everyone builds their own meal. The only challenge? Be ready for a little mess and some planning. To encourage selective eaters to try new foods, it is important to create exposure opportunities in a no pressure environment. No plate dinners and/or grazing tables provide

This summer, have fun in the sun and stay safe in the water! Here are a few tips for caregivers and parents to keep kids safe this summer. Quick Facts: Drowning is the number one cause of injury death in children ages 1-4. Nearly 70% of drownings among children under four occur during non-swim times. Bathtubs are the most common location of drownings inside the home, and more than half of bathtub deaths involve children less than one year old. Drowning is almost always silent, and it only takes seconds.

Getting a selective eater to try new foods is a process. Keep in mind that the goal is to provide your child with the opportunity to be exposed to new foods. Continue to introduce them to unfamiliar foods, have them see that you eat and enjoy them, all the while making sure they have safe foods that they know they can count on. Giving your child permission helps to reduce anxiety around new foods. Inviting your child to be around and try new foods is a very different experience than forcing them to try new foods.

With summer here, your kiddos are likely on a constant hunt for snacks. To help them develop healthy eating habits, try spacing meals and snacks about two hours apart. This gives their little tummies time to feel hungry, enjoy a snack, and recognize when they’re full. When kids “graze” throughout the day—eating small amounts here and there—their bodies have a harder time learning to recognize hunger and fullness cues. Grazing can also lead to more frequent choices of less nutritious, grab-and-go snacks. Let's Support Healthier Habits To support healthier habits, pre-plan snack options and post a visual snack “menu” on the fridge. This gives kids structure, helps them feel independent, and encourages better choices. And why not make snack time fun and educational? Try simple food crafts together—it’s a great way to bond with your child(ren), have fun in the kitchen, and explore possible new foods at the same time!
