PMC ALL STAR: Eleanor

PMC All Star: Eleanor

Eleanor might be small, but she is MIGHTY. Eleanor was born at 29 weeks at just under 3 pounds. From the very beginning Mom and Dad knew Eleanor was a fighter. Eleanor first started coming to PMC in May of this year when she was just over a year old. Approximately two months prior to coming to PMC, Eleanor was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. When the therapist first met Eleanor and her mother, they clicked very quickly and Eleanor was able to tolerate being handled, positioned, and stretched with minimal to no crying. Every child's level of comfort varies. When Eleanor started PT she was only rolling front to back (Eleanor HATED belly time), she was not able to sit, she didn't have any protective reactions, and she had very little experience with standing. Eleanor was able to get a pair of braces quickly and we got right to work with standing and taking steps. Eleanor has been working extremely hard in the clinic and her family has really helped carry over the hard work at home as well! Consistency really does pay off!

Ms. Meghan has been seeing Eleanor for approximately 6 months and shared that the progress Eleanor has made to this point is truly incredible!

Here are some of the awesome things that Ms. Meghan wanted to highlight in Eleanor's progress:

  • She is able to sit on a step for minutes at a time, and she is able to catch herself from falling to the left (righty is coming right along as well).
  • She is rolling all over the place!
  • She is able to stand with support at a surface and play. She can stand up from sitting WITHOUT support from her arms to pull herself up.
  • Best of all: she has taken off with walking in her gait trainer.
  • Eleanor is very motivated to move towards dogs, veggie straws, and light-up toys! She is able to army crawl and is now working towards crawling on her hands and knees.
  • Eleanor LOVES the pool and is very excited about being able to do aquatic therapy in 2023!

We are so proud of all of the hard work she and her family have put in and we can’t wait to see what she does next!

Apraxia is a motor speech disorder. Childhood apraxia of speech is a rare, but lifelong disorder that makes it difficult for individuals to move their mouth muscles in order to speak. The important thing to note about Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is that the child knows what they want to say, but may struggle with connecting the brain to the muscles that must accompany speech.
