Ideas for Family Fun During the Holidays!

There is more than one way to enjoy the holidays, stay active, and have fun. Here are some ideas to enjoy the season!

FITNESS IDEAS

  • Holiday 5K - Find a holiday 5K or make your own… 3.1 miles to walk or run and enjoy the holiday decorations around town. Even better if the registration fee benefits the local community. If you make your own route, bring your pup to enjoy the lights as well.
  • Movies + Exercise - Watching a holiday movie with the family, at the commercial breaks, get up and move. Dance, walk a loop around your house, do squats, sit ups, push ups…pick a different exercise for each break and get moving!
  • Make Cleaning Exercise - Have family coming in for the holiday, get busy deep cleaning your house. Scrubbing, washing, bending, and vacuuming can definitely get your heart rate up.
  • Take The Stairs -  If given the choice, choose the stairs every time – shopping at the mall, find the stairs; parking in a parking garage, opt for the stairs; in your own home, climb the stairs twice for every one time you need to go up or down.\
  • Bursts Of Speed - If walking is more your speed, incorporate bursts of faster walking to rev up your heart.
  • Seasonal Sport - Try a seasonal activity you have never done before. Maybe ice skating is new to you or go sledding with your kids.
  • Make a Plan  - Be sure to PLAN some activity into every day, bonus points if you are active with the family!

HEALTHY HABITS AT HOME DURING THE HOLIDAYS

  1. Enjoy a large glass of water before meals
  2. Enjoy a small bite of a sweet treat; share half with a family member or friend
  3. Allow 15 minutes for your brain to process if you are full before going back for seconds
